Does this film have exploding heads? What about flesh-eating zombies? And maybe some really scary stuff I can freak out over? What about sex? One look at any Thai film poster and you’ll know what you’re going to see.

Thai movie posters may not be the best works of art in the world but they do the one thing a good film poster ought to do: they tell you everything you want to know about a movie without having to think too hard.

Does this film have exploding heads? What about flesh-eating zombies? And maybe some really scary stuff I can freak out over? What about sex?

One look at any Thai film poster and you’ll know what you’re going to get.

Now some people out there don’t like this kind of thing. I can understand that. Maybe they don’t like seeing key plot twists or what gruesome things to expect. That’s okay, I kinda like to know what’s on the menu. Or, maybe it’s because they prefer the vague, anodyne descriptions they get on providers Netflix or Amazon Prime. Stuff like: “Joe Bloggs comes home to find his life changed.” Or, “Amy knows a secret about someone in her past, will she be able to keep it?” This is when I usually shrug and say, “Who cares?” All I want to know is: “Does Amy fight any zombies? Or, does Joe get some brain-splattering chainsaw action?”

Not every country’s posters are the same. Some have posters that have more to do with the exuberant imaginings of the artist rather than the content of the film. While others are as dull as car adverts with each vehicle looking the same as the last. That’s why Thai movie posters are in a class of their own as each posters tries to cram as much information as possible into a limited amount. And generally does it successfully.
