David Bowie’s 100 Most Influential Books, Comics And Magazines

We are each of us a mash-up of what we experience and know. A retrospective of Davis Bowie’s (8 January 1947 – 10 January 2016) work at the Art Gallery of Ontario featured a long list of the artist’s top must-read books. Bowie’s life story has become dulled by the retelling, but a list of what he read delivers a new angle.

This is what he read in solitude – just as we’ve seen the reading lists of other creative minds, like writers Ernest Hemingway, Joan Didion and Anthony Burgess, singer Mark E. Smith, impresario Malcolm McLaren, actress Marilyn Monroe and scientist Carl Sagan.

According to curator Geoffrey Marsh, Bowie was “a voracious reader” who could read “a book a day”.
