Published in 1899, Mrs. Ernest Ames’ An ABC for Baby Patriots inducts the Great British baby in the ways of the Great British Empire. The book, which was – get this – printed in Holland (not part of the British Empire), was both written and illustrated by Mary Francis Ames (1853-1929), authors of such patriotic tomes as Wonderful England!: Or, The Happy Land (1902), The Great Crusade: an alphabet for everybody (1903), and illustrator for her husband’s work How the Boers Were Beaten (1900).
