In 1834 Charles Lambert, the son of a snuff miller from Surrey, set up a cigarette manufacturing business with Charles Butler. The company had its first premises in St. John Street, Clerkenwell, London. Two years later, to cope with increasing demand, they moved to Drury Lane. Along with being one of the first British business to manufacture cigars for the UK market Lambert & Butler also sold cigarettes and pipe tobacco.
The partnership continued to be very successful and the business grew substantially. However, in December 1901 the company merged with Imperial Tobacco to protect itself from being taken over by the American Tobacco Company. The brand perhaps subsided from view while under the control of Imperial Tobacco and slowly died away. However, in 1974 Lambert & Butler was relaunched as a king size cigarette and the brand still exists today.
Lambert & Butler produced its first set of cigarette cards in 1898. Major companies had their own studios devoted entirely to the production of cigarette cards. Football cards continued to be popular and it was not uncommon for print-runs in the millions. To encourage the collecting of a particular series, the tobacco companies produced special albums that could be purchased from local tobacconists.
