The Abraham Lincoln Conspiracy Album (1865)

This album traces the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. It was compiled late in the summer of 1865 by armchair detective Col. Arnold A. Rand (1837 – 1917), a retired Union Officer of the 4th Cavalry Regiment of Massachusetts Volunteers and an avid collector of Civil War images.

Beginning with a view of Ford’s Theater, the crime scene, the scrapbook narrative ends with the conspirators’ executions. The photographs were taken by Alexander Gardner, who took portraits of the criminals aboard the USS Montauk, anchored in the Potomac River. Of particular note is Mr Lewis Payne, whose fashions and haircut suggest time-travel.

Images are mounted on gray/blue board. All of the pages are cut from the binding. It’s all terrific stuff, imagining the retired soldier sat in his parlour puzzling out the who, where, why and when of the biggest crime of the age.
