Haight Street Hippies In The Summer of Love

Kodachromes of hippies idling in Haight Ashbury - 1967-1968

Between March 29, 1967 and March 14, 1968, Charles Cushman loaded his camera with Kodachrome film and mooched along Haight St in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, California. This was the Summer of Love. At least two of the flower children flipped Cushman the bird. Others loafed on the sidewalk. This was the scene at the culmination of a movement that began on January 14, 1967 with the Human Be-In at Golden Gate Park. Hippies are still going on, albeit toking under new tags: greens, crusties, tree-huggers and eco-warriors. All easy to deride, but who doesn’t like living in the fresh air, free love and larking about in a bus?
