We’re off to New Jersey in the 1980s to see Pulsating Paula’s archive of bikers in T-Shirts. We’ve been down and dirty with these tees before, from back when T-shirt slogans were tackygroovy, shocking and offensive.

Paula took most of these picture at biker meets in and around New Jersey. Free expression reigned. And there was a duty to offend. Away from the political, sexual and plain funny, some T-Shirt slogans refer to helmet laws.

In New Jersey, all drivers and passengers are required by law to wear a helmet. The helmet must meet the safety standards set by New Jersey’s Director of Motor Vehicles and be equipped with either a neck or chin strap and be ‘reflectorized’ on both sides. Only three US States – Illinois, Iowa, and New Hampshire – have no helmet laws.
