In July 1943, Esther Bubley trained her camera on the faces of spectators massed in Washington DC to watch the parade to recruit civilian defense volunteers.

In July 1943, Esther Bubley trained her camera on the faces of spectators massed in Washington DC to watch the parade to recruit civilian defense volunteers. Some sat on the statue to Major General Winfield Scott Hancock, the bronze at Pennsylvania Avenue and 7th Street that honors the Civil War general who successfully repelled the Confederate attack in the Battle of Gettysburg. Others stood on the sidewalk and sat on the kerbside.
