Julie Frances Christie was born at the Singlijan Tea Estate in Assam, India. Where her father Francis “Frank” St. John Christie ran a tea plantation there. She was a boarder at the independent Convent of Our Lady school in St. Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, after being expelled from another convent school for telling a risqué joke about a puny penis.
Christie’s first major film role in Billy Liar (1963) brought rave reviews for her. David Jenkins in the Daily Telegraph wrote – “she was held as embodying (gorgeously) the free-spirited youthquake that was to come.”
Christie once said: “I think I’m probably so vain it’s quite impossible. But I look back now and I see photos and I think, “Coo! Phwoar!” And I think, wouldn’t it have been nice to have had that knowledge when you were walking into a room?”
