In 1976, Mikhail Belomlinsky (born St Petersburg 1934), a graduate of the revered St. Petersburg Academy of Fine Art, illustrated J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit for the Detskaya Liretatura Publishing Company. He based Bilbo Baggins on Soviet actor Yevgeniy Leonov (2 September 1926 – 29 January 1994), who once narrated a Soviet version of Winnie The Pooh. (You can see Leonov reading from the book here.)
