While living living in flop houses and on the streets of Chicago, artist Lee Godie posed for pictures in the city’s photobooths. In 1928, Willy Michel began to ask the great and good of French society to join him inside the photomaton booth installed at his Paris photography studio. The resulting pictures are a hoot. In the 1980s, Mark Charnock and his friends were drawn to the photobooths to be found in the corners of stations and branches of Woolworths in London. Donette “Donny” Verzall sat for photobooth selfies from 1933 through 1954. And millions more of us would record a day out by slipping into a photobooth and waiting for the shutter to click. Like these people did.
