Jan Toorop (1858–1928) was born on the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies. He moved the Netherlands in 1870, studying art at Amsterdam’s Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Spells living in The Hague, Brussels – where he joined Les Vingts, a group of artists centred around James Ensor – and in his wife Annie Hall’s native England were followed by the family’s move to Katwijk aan Zee on the Dutch coast. It was there that he developed his signature swirls.
