After 11pm on the London Undergound in the Early 1990s

It's after 11pm on a Friday night and Londoners are heading home and heading out on the Tube - Mark McEvoy took their photos

London Underground 1990s

Mark McEvoy was with his camera on the London Underground in the 1990s. His pictures from 1992–1995 were all taken after 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights, when Londoners were coming home or going out.  They’re now in a book published by the always brilliant Cafe Royal books.

As ever, if you see yourself or someone you recognise, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you. For now, let’s imagine the stories between the photos…

London Underground 1990s

“Due to the confined tube compartment space I mostly asked permission before taking photographs. This led to all sorts of unexpected conversations and reactions some of which were captured on film.”

– Mark McEvoy, London Underground in the 1990s

“My work stems from a documentary approach that is intuitive and visceral, led by my fascination with human behaviour, cultural/psychological identity and the contrasts that divide the world through opposing beliefs and traditions. I’m especially interested in capturing what lies below the surface, unnoticed and often ignored.”

– Mark McEvoy

“After a Fine Art Foundation course at Chelsea School of Art and a year of media studies at LCP I became seduced by the magical combination of photography and travel then followed the path as a reportage photographer. Throughout the 1990s I worked as a freelance, travelling extensively through India and Far East as well as working closer to home to produce photo essays for various newspapers and magazines including The Independent Saturday and Sunday magazine supplements. I completed an MA in Design for Interactive Media in 2001.”
