JACKSON, MS - APRIL 13: Mug shots of Freedom Riders as the 50th anniversary of the 1961 Civil Rights Freedom Rides approaches on April 13, 2011, in Jackson, MS. On May 4, 1961, James Farmer led 13 Freedom Riders (7 Black, 6 White) out of Washington, DC, on Greyhound and Trailways buses. The plan was to ride through Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Their final destination was to be New Orleans, Louisiana. When the riders arrive in Jackson, MS, and attempt to use the "whites only" restrooms and lunch counters, they are immediately arrest and charged with "breach of peace" and refusal to obey a police officer.
