ON May 1 1965, Liverpool FC won the FA Cup for the first time. They defeated Leeds United 2-1 at Wembley Stadium. Liverpool had an all-British line-up; but Leeds featured two frieingers: the Republic of Ireland’s great Johnny Giles and South African Albert Johanneson.
Before the final, Liverpool met Ken Dodd.
Comedian Ken Dodd was in danger of being tickled to death at the London Palladium this evening when, on the eve of the FA Cup Final, the Liverpool team turned up to see the new Ken Dodd show, “Doddy’s here”. Ken Dodd himself a Liverpudlian, is a keen Liverpool supporter. Date: 30/04/1965

The pre-match tensions. One years earlier, Liverpool had won the first division league title the previous season and Leeds United had been promoted from Division 2. This season, Leeds had finished runners-up to champions Manchester United, with Liverpool in 7th. Both clubs were on the cusp of greatness. It was a tough game to call.

The injury happened, Byrne said, when he collided with Bobby Collins.

Displaying the FA Cup to the wildly cheering crowds, the Liverpool FC players are seen on their triumphal drive in an open top coach to the Town Hall from Lime Street Station for a civic reception on their return to Liverpool after beating Leeds Utd in the Cup Final at Wembley. Crowds estimated between 200,000 and 250,000 gave them a tumultuous welcome. The excited fans burst through the barriers and there were hundreds of casualties.
