These illustrations of Art Deco and Art Nouveau patterns are from a 1914 edition of Samarkande : 20 compositions en couleurs dans le style oriental by Émile-Alain Séguy (E.A. Séguy). The work was the sights of Samarkande, a city on the ancient Silk Road in Uzbekistan known for its mosques and mausoleums.
Séguy (1877-1951) was a leading French designer working at the beginning of the 20th century. He favoured the hand-stencilling pochoir technique – a process in which the artist uses stencils to create layers of dense colour. These 20 designs were possibly intended for use in textiles or wallpapers. All 20 images are available as fine art prints in the Flashbak Shop.
