Photographer Jonathan Higbee looks for the unusual. Through his images we see new sides to the human body – it’s physiognomy, anatomy, expression and colour – and the differences and merging between people and places. Our interest is piqued as the familiar is caught in untypical moments. Life is full of these snapshots of weirdness, juxtapositions that play with perception and perspective. In a camera flash the everyday in imbued with personality. Higbee waits and records the fleeting for us to view at our leisure, when we have time to stop and stare. His observations lead to emotion, most commonly feelings of lightness – his photos are laced with a compassionate wit and humour. And there’s a generous dash of something more. Higbee shows us as we are now, a sense of life lived in 21st Century New York City. Jumbled up and recomposed, symbols and styles become more obvious and dynamic.
