“Collecting the photobooth strip (approximate size 8 inches by 1.5 inches) has been an adventure,” says vintage photography collector Robert E. Jackson.
“If you see or own an amazing photobooth, you can pretty much figure it used to be part of a 4-pose strip. The individual photobooths are more common than the strips in the marketplace. The images you see here are both vintage and otherwise. The photobooth strip continues to be part of our visual culture as many photobooths can still be found in bars and such around the U.S. and other countries.
“Going into a booth and acting crazy is fun. You are hidden behind a curtain and there is an element of secrecy and expressive freedom which exists. People will never tire of taking photos of themselves and their friends. We live in a selfie-driven world of imagery. You take the picture, the machine makes the picture. It is a collaboration between composition and chemicals.”
