In 1929, Jean, 20, was living on rue Clairault, Paris. He worked at a brokerage house on rue de la Grange Batelière. On December 11, Jean met Rose, 18, at the city’s Saint-Lazare metro station. She lived in the 15th arrondissement, and took classes in hairdressing at the École nationale de Coiffure.

On March 10, 1930, Rose boarded the Ville de Verdun, a liner bound for New Caledonia in the south Pacific. Two years later, Jean returned to the scene of their first meeting, homes and dates. He took photographs that he annotated and commented on.  Jean inked a red cross on his pictures to show where Rose had been and no longer was. He collected his pictures in an album and kept it for Rose.

Many years later, the album was on sale at a flea market. Why and what happened to Jean and Rose we don’t know… if anyone has the passenger list of the Ville de Verdun, or knew Jean and Rose, please get in touch.
