In 1980, West Ham United won the FA Cup with an unlikely 1-0 win over Arsenal on 10 May 1980. The Hammers’ supporters celebrated at the team’s victory parade in East London. The parade began in Stratford Broadway and finished at Newham town hall. An estimated 200,000 people lined the route.

Most of thee fabulous pictures were taken by British photographer Eamonn McCabe (28 July 1948 – 2 October 2022). He started out as a sports photographer and later worked in editorial portrait photography. A number of his portraits are held in the collection of the National Portrait Gallery, London.

This story was first published with the photographer’s permission in 2015.
