In October 1970s, the 1969 Woodstock Festival was immortalised in a comic book. The romance story “I Found My Love at the Woodstock Festival!” appeared in Falling in Love #118.
Comics and Woodstock were a good match. Charles M. Schulz’s didn’t name the little yellow bird and Snoopy’s best friend Woodstock until June 1970, having introduced the character in March 1966.
Fourteen months after Woodstock, DC published this story (with art by Murphy Anderson) about two college students, Sally and Robin, and their journey of discovery. The end of which is hard to predict…
The Woodstock Music and Art Festival was staged at a 600-acre dairy farm in the Catskills town of Bethel, in upstate New York. From August 15th to 18th 1969, more than 400,000 souls watched 32 acts perform, mostly in the rain. It became a “free concert” only after the event drew thousands more people than the organisers had prepared for, having sold 186,000 tickets.
And that was not all. You could also get the Woodstock accessories. The advert below borrowed the Woodstock movie’s slogan – “No one who was there will ever be the same”.
It Happened at Woodstock!
One other Woodstock story of note appeared in Marvel’s My Love magazine #14 (November 1971). It was called “It Happened at Woodstock!”.
The story was richly illustrated by Gray Morrow (March 7, 1934 – November 6, 2001), with the tagline:
“No one told me the price of admission would be a broken heart.”
