These images of Mick Jagger form a portfolio of 10 postcards by artist Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987). Produced with New York’s Castelli Graphics, the postcards were used to advertise an edition of 250 portfolios of the same series, silkscreened and signed by the artist.

Andy And Mick

Andy Warhol and Mick Jagger met in 1964 in New York. Warhol liked what he saw, noting in 1979:

He’s androgynous enough for almost anyone. That’s always been his basic appeal, mixed with the facts that: 1) He’s very talented; 2) He’s very intelligent; 3) He’s very handsome; 4) He’s very adorable; 5) He’s a great business person; 6) He’s a great movie star; 7) I like his fake cockney accent… Image is so important to rock stars. Mick Jagger is the rock star with the longest running image. He’s the one all the young white kids copy. That’s why every detail of his appearance is important.

A friendship bloomed and in 1971, Warhol designed the band’s album cover for Sticky Fingers.

Creating the Mick Jagger Series

In the summer of 1975, Jagger and his then wife Bianca were staying at Warhol’s house in Long Island. It was there that Warhol took snapshots of Jagger, using the images to trace his line drawings before adding screened areas of solid color.

Dear Andy,

I’m really pleased you can do the art-work for our new hits album. Here are 2 boxes of material which you can use, and the record.

In my short sweet experience, the more complicated the format of the album, e.g. more complex than just pages or fold-out, the more fucked-up the reproduction and agonising the delays. But, having said that, I leave it in your capable hands to do what ever you want………..and please write back saying how much money you would like.

Doubtless a Mr.Al Steckler will contact you in New York, with any further information. He will probably look nervous and say “Hurry up” but take little notice.

Love,

(Signed)

MICK JAGGER
