Cellblock 9 at Eastern State Penitentiary. In May of 1977, construction began on the first major additions to the Eastern State Penitentiary - Cellblocks 8 and 9. When these cellblocks were completed in 1879, Warden Michael Cassidy said that the cells were ìbetter than any room you could get at the shore for 25 dollars.î This photo shows the Cellblock 9 corridor 1890s with food carts.
