In spring of 1981, Andy Warhol (August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was setting up Myths, a portfolio of ten screenprints featuring fictional characters: The Star (Greta Garbo in her titular role in the 1931 film Mata Hari), Uncle Sam, The Witch (Margaret Hamilton, star of the 1931 film The Wizard of Oz, recreated  her character), Mammy (the historical archetype of the maternal black woman), Howdy Doody, Dracula, Mickey Mouse, Superman, Santa Claus and The Shadow (a masked vigilante fighting crime in 1930s New York City who starred in an American radio program that ran from 1937 to 1954).

Photographer Robert Levin spent two days with Warhol, accompanying him everywhere he went. So we see the artist at The Factory, getting a facial at Janet Sartin Spa, riding a bicycle in the East Village and bumping into John Waters on Madison Avenue.
