Variety Act 11: Mac Bull from Philadelphia in His Frightful Loop-the-Loop Ride in His Car by Moriz Jung, 1907
In 1907, the Wiener Werkstätte art movement produced a set of 12 prints featuring different Variety acts. These Varieténummer – Vaudeville performances – were both madly daring and fanciful.
Mac Bull from Philadelphia (Act 11) would drive his car around a rainbow. A. Lucci the Famous Hunger Artist (Act 3) had gone 132 days without food, and though reduced to a skeleton was still smoking, reading and in pretty good spirits. In Act 6, Zoltan Toeroek, Child Prodigy, will play the violin – whilst still in the womb!
You can buy this series of 12 prints and corresponding postcards by Moriz Jung and Rudolf Kalvach for the Wiener Werkstätte in the shop.

Variety Act 4 Bumbery Blads & Cie, Plastic Poses (Varieténummer 4 Bumbery Blads & Cie Plastiche Posen) by Moriz Jung, 1907
The Wiener Werkstätte (Viennese Workshops; Austria) was dedicated to the production of modern decorative arts and crafts. Together with the Vienna Secession, out of which it was formed, the movement sought Gesamtkunstwerk, or “total work of art”, a cohesive aesthetic across the whole designed environment.
The Wiener Werkstätte produced many postcards that featured the Workshops’ output in architecture, textiles, fashion, and glass and ceramics – a move that helped Werkstätte attain two of its goals: first, narrowing the gap in prestige between artistic genres; and second, bolstering the commercial visibility of its designs.
