Miniskirt Monday #3: The Mini Through The Years 1968-1974

1968-1974   The miniskirt caught on in the US and Canada a few years later than the UK and Europe, with skirts still knee-length in the States as late as 1967.  By ’68, however, the hemlines were finally hiked – the mini had officially arrived. By the early Seventies, the hemline had already traveled about as high as it could go.  Once reaching its absolute limit, running completely out of leg real estate, there was nowhere to go but down. And so, by the time 1975 rolled around, the miniskirt in the States was all but dead.  Longer dresses and slacks were the mini’s sad replacements (with hot pants carrying the torch). To illustrate the rise and fall and changes in style of the beloved miniskirt let’s have a look at the mini as it marched through the late Sixties and Seventies in the US.  Here are a few catalog pages from each year starting with 1968 and ending with its last year of popularity, 1974.  Enjoy.
