Days Out In Camden Maine with Theresa Babb And Her Friends – 19th Century

Gorgeous photographs of friends and family in 19th Century Maine

Photographs of Camden area taken by Theresa Parker Babb between 1898-1900. Theresa was the wife of Knox Mill superintendent C.W. Babb (1863-1956), and she was the grandmother of the donor, Janan Babb Vaughn. Theresa Babb was born in 1868 and died in 194To Camden Maine in the company of photographer Theresa Babb (1868-1948), wife to Knox Mill treasurer Charles W. Babb (1863-1956).Camden libraries also tells us that their son Charles Jr. would become the mill’s longtime superintendent and president. But this isn’t about work. This is about Theresa and her family and friends she and others photographed as they languished at the beach, walked the dog, hugged the cat, laughed, pulled faces for the camera at picnics and enjoyed some al fresco boozing at Sherman’s Point in 1900.in the lead photo above, Theresa is 2nd from the left holding a bottle..There’s nothing stiff about these portraits of lives in the 1890s.Babb invites us in.The camera is low, as if we’re part of the crowd of women sat on the grass. They seem to see us, as we see them.and we know some of their names because Theresa Babb labelled the photos with short captions.
