ON This Day In Photos: November 14 1973 – Princess Anne, 23, marries Mark Phillips, a commoner and lieutenant in the Queen’s Dragoon Guards. It was only the second time in more than 200 years that a member of the British Royal Family had married a pleb.

The bridesmaid was played by Lady Sarah-Armstrong Jones, Princess Margaret’s nine-year-old daughter. Prince Edward, also nine, was the pageboy.

After that, highlights were: riding horses; Ian Ball, 26, trying to murder the princess’s detective and kidnap Her Royalness in 1974; more horse riding; a honeymoon on the royal yacht Britannia for 18 days sailing in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans; horses; children Peter and Zara; riding horses; him riding New Zealand art teacher Heather Tonkin, resulting in a a daughter named Felicity; horses; divorce; horses.

In December 1992 Princess Anne married Commander Timothy Laurence. Captain Mark Phillips married Sandy Pflueger, and had a daughter called Stephanie.
