Farewell Then ‘Mad’ Frankie Fraser, aka ‘the Dentist’: A British Gangster’s Life

Frankie Fraser's Tour of London

Farewell then ‘Mad’ Frankie Fraser, aka ‘the Dentist’. Pulling teeth out with pliars, that was your game (though you said that was never needed). Hanging, chopping, slicing, shooting and stabbing – they were your other games. Forty murders including a dog, or so you claimed. A racecourse bucket boy for Darby Sabini’s razor gangs at 10, you spent 42 years behind borstal, prison and mental institution bars. Dubbed ‘the most dangerous man in Britain’ by two home secretaries, and honoured to be recognised as such. Then the autumn years – raconteur, author, coach-tour guide and elder statesman of British gangland. Your first ASBO at 89. You saw many to an early grave, nothing said. Now, after 90 eventful years, you too are brown bread. Here are some slices of your many lives…

The ‘swinging’ sixties saw the noose abolished, although Fraser attempted some hangings of his own – on a prison warden and a judge. Corporal punishment was the worst he suffered himself…
