YOU’RE looking at an illustration from a 1530s manual on warfare. The advice is to “set fire to a castle or city which you can’t get at otherwise”.

One way of achieving this is with a flaming rocket cat. You can also surprise the enemy by using doves as instruments of death.

We like to think of ourselves as the sum of humanity, the ideal to which evolution and God have been aiming. It turns out that we’re not. We’re a project in work. Even those go-ahead Lol Cats are around 500 years old. Author and skirmisher Franz Helm of Cologne, beat you all to it.

>He has tips, and uses for cats:

“Create a small sack like a fire-arrow . if you would like to get at a town or castle, seek to obtain a cat from that place. And bind the sack to the back of the cat, ignite it, let it glow well and thereafter let the cat go, so it runs to the nearest castle or town, and out of fear it thinks to hide itself where it ends up in barn hay or straw it will be ignited.”
